Treating them is also a delicate procedure that requires specialized care. The type of care given will affect the infant's immediate health and have a long- term effect on the baby's future. All types of healthcare providers must be aware of what the sick infants need and how the care should be provided. S.T.A.B.L.E. classes were started to help these professionals get appropriate health and educational requirements for delivering effective care. Educating the healthcare professionals is important in safeguarding the lives of the infants as they will be better prepared to work quickly to remedy critical situations. S.T.A.B.L.E. program was introduced in Canada and the US in 1996 but is currently implemented in over 45 countries around the world. While there are different neonatal education programs, S.T.A.B.L.E. classes are the most popular because of their great success. The programs maximize the learning process with a high degree of information retention and recall through the use of mnemonic. They also afford students the opportunity to complete hands-on demos that simulate real-life medical emergencies. The S.T.A.B.L.E. classes are composed of six modules for assessment and care, with a seventh module emphasizing the professional responsibility of evaluating and improving the care the infants receive. The six modules are: • Sugar & Safe Care: o Error reduction and patient safety issues involving neonates. o Dealing with risks and signs of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. o Initial IV fluid therapy. • Temperature: o Dealing with risks of hypothermia. o Protection from cooling and the loss of body heat. • Airway o Evaluating respiratory distress. o Providing help during endotracheal intubation. o Methods of securing oral endotracheal tubes. • Blood Pressure o Dealing with cardiogenic, septic and hypovolemic shock. o Ways of administering dopamine safely. • Lab Work o Risk factors predisposing to infection. o Various laboratory tests for evaluating infection. • Emotional Support o Dealing with crises families go through when infants are in ICU. o General support given to parents with sick infants. The seventh module is quality improvement. The S.T.A.B.L.E. classes are designed for healthcare professionals who deal with infants in the Neonatal Emergency and Intensive Care Unit departments. These professionals include nurses and nursing students, EMT and EMT students, physicians, respiratory therapists, paramedics and firefighters among others ezine |
| Roberto Mancini will appeal Vincent Kompany's red card. Posted: 10 Jan 2012 02:47 PM PST ![]() Wayne Rooney has hit back at Roberto Mancini after the Manchester City boss blamed him for Vincent Kompany's dismissal in United's FA Cup win on Sunday. Mancini pointed the finger at Rooney after the United striker waved an imaginary card at referee Chris Foy in the aftermath of Kompany's two-footed lunge at Nani. Kompany was shown a straight red card and must now serve a four- match ban, but Rooney has denied that he influenced Foy's decision in his side's 3-2 win at the Etihad. Rooney, who bagged two goals in the third round thriller, tweeted: "Funny how people think i got kompany sent off. Im not ref. i didnt give red card. But it was a clear red card. 2 footed tackle." Mancini, who confirmed the club will appeal against the decision, had said: "It was not a red card. Rooney told him his decision. He was near the referee." The Italian was himself criticised last week for waving an imaginary card during the 3-0 win over Liverpool in reaction to Martin Skrtel's foul on Yaya Toure. He added: "When I did this against Liverpool, people told me not to do it. I said I was sorry and made a mistake. Today...maybe if you look at it." |
